I have an emg81 and an X2n and I think the 81 sounds better....but when it comes to pickups you really need to think about the other factors first like the amp, guitar its in, etc.

Great playing, nice music. X2n's are awesome I used to have one in a guitar and it indeed ruled emg81's imo, don't have it anymore though.

The X2N is more powerful. I think it would kick an EMG's ass, but that's just me.

I really like your sound, how does the X2N bear up with solid state?

Anthrax and Testament use the JB and sound super thick but it sounded like thin brittle surf music in my guitars but once again my equation does not have a wall of half stacks and various processors in the mix. Everything is great provided the right combination is found. Good luck in achieving tone, it can be a nightmare!

Also, I am recording 2 tracks of guitar which thickens things up and I use 10 gauge strings. The only pickups I personally do not like are Seymour Duncan. I know that a lot of great players use them but for me they always sound brittle and thin but once again it is all about matching equipment, in my situation they do not sound good but I have heard bands that sound awesome with them but pickups are just one part of an equation in your tone.

X2N, can sound thin but the kind of wood your guitar is made of is key. I use Mahogany neck/body it has a much thicker sound then Maple, Alder or Swamp Ash, I also use a Pod XT. I have played tons of pickups and you have to match the pickup to what you are playing through and the kind of wood. Some amps love my combination and some do not. I use to use the M22SD it was very similar to the X2N, I loved that pickup as well. I also love the Evolution and intend on getting one for a guitar one day.
